Libertador (2013)

No ratings yetMedium-Full

The Bolivar Libertador is an exclusive 2013 product for the Casa del Habano points of sale. This module had previously been produced in 2006 for the French market as a regional edition. The demand was so great and the quality of the cigar so well received that Habanos has decided to relaunch it. This sizeable cigar, with a diameter of 2.14 cm, is strong and aromatic; a very nice creation.

Start: 00:25 Finish: 01:15 Pairing with : whiskey sours cocktail 1/3: toast, salt, nutty 2/3: toast, salt, nutty 3/3: toast salt nutty Very light in the first third, typical Libertador taste, nut dominant. Drag is nice but since this is a massive Churchill, first third being light is to be expected. Toasty undertones. Two third and last third were much stronger to smoke with so much more smoke output. The taste has been quite consistent throughout. Impeccable build quality, burns like a champ. Rating: 7/10

With a ring gauge of 54 and measuring 164mm in length, the Bolívar Libertador made for a perfect selection to while away a couple of hours on a cool, wet Sunday morning in the tropics. Handmade with hand-selected harvest from the plantations of Vuelta Abajo in the Pinar del Rio region, this medium-bodied double robusto is exclusive to La Casa del Habano as denoted on the supplementary band. A cold draw at start brought tastes that was reminiscent of cinnamon and citrus. When fired up, the first third produced distinctively sweet flavours of raisins and cream with the occasional leathery undertones that flirted briefly with the profile. Caramel, cloves and a hint of applewood chips characterised the next section. The pleasant sweetness encountered in the first two thirds received a complementary embrace of leather and spice with a fleeting taste of coffee at the final lap. This cigar with its complexity of rich, bold flavours so synonymous with the Bolívar name was extremely enjoyable and my hunch is that a longer period of aging in a well-humidified humidor would make this quite a sublime experience. Patience will surely and ultimately reap its rewards. 1 hour 50 minutes.
